El Día de los Muertos

During this project we studied Día de los muertos (the day of the dead) in the end we created two end products a calavera with artwork and a description of a past family member or pet. Throughout this project we studied the rich culture of this holiday along with all of the traditions that come with it. We learned about how this holiday evolved in Mexico and even about some of the history of Mexico. We created two calaveras one about a profession and the other about a specific person, we then choose one we would create a piece of artwork for. We also studied how calaveras have a certain comedy factor to them. During this project we read a book regarding Dia de los muertos and furthered our knowledge of the spanish language by learning about some things such as boot verbs and talking about someone in the past. At the end of this project we had an exhibition, which was a Dia de los muertos celebration where we displayed our work. There was face painting, mexican style dancers, sugar skulls ect. 
During this project we had to do much refinement when writing our calaveras and descriptions, I went through multiple drafts of each one. Each draft was turned in and edited by one of my teachers, in the end all of my products were very refined. Each draft showed growth through conjugating verbs and figuring out how to make it sound good. 
My understanding of the Mexican culture grew a lot throughout this project, I have studied Día de los muertos in past years however this year my knowledge was still furthered. We learned about the wars between native people in Mexico and Europeans and how this holiday was adapted and changed throughout time. We studied the traditions people have in Mexico such as calavera writing and remembering the deceased which we got to experience for ourselves. My knowledge of Mexican culture greatly grew throughout this and I was able to experience it in new ways.
