LINK Internship @ Travis Price Architects

LINK Anticipation and Preparation

As I was looking  for my internship I encountered many challenges and set backs. The steps leading up to finding this internship consisted of mainly researching architecture and design studios and contacting them. However this led to many dead ends and I often received no response or when I called I was told that they don't accept high school interns. I contacted about 6 architecture/design studios in L.A. and Denver and received no responses other than that I needed to wait until college.  I found this internship through a previous Animas high school student who did this internship last year through a family connection. As soon as I contacted this firm I was welcomed right away and immediately chose to do it. I choose to pursue a link internship in architecture and design to see if it is something I want to study and major in, in college and later as a career. I hope to gain more knowledge of architecture and design field from this experience, and see what its like work as an architect. I hope I can bring my creative abilities and mindset to this business and help them in any way possible. And finally, I hope the mark I leave on this company is positive and leaves the same doors open for future interns as it did for me.

LINK internships are 3 week long internships required for Juniors at Animas High School. These internships are a way for students to explore an interest or something they may want to pursue as a career. Students have the option stay in Durango or leave. They are paired with mentors who guide and teach students about their work and career path. These internships are a great way for students to prepare for their futures and experience what its really like to work in a specific work place and career field. Students learn the positives and negatives about this each field and this can reveal whether or not it is something they would like to pursue.

During my internship I worked at Travis Price Architects, a small award winning architecture firm located in Washington D.C..

This firm designs everything from small residential housing to large commercial and industrial complexes. They strive to create architecture as a form of art and design modern, green   buildings that are culturally diverse and seek to inspire.

LINK project and internship description

During my internship I learned about this career field by, sitting in on meetings, going on site visits, talking with my mentors and going through the process of designing a building. For my project I decided with my mentor to design some kind of building with my final product being the final floor plans drawn along with a 3D model created in google SketchUp. Even though architects today do all of their drafting digitally the CAD programs they use are very complex and hard to use this is why I did mine by hand but I did use SketchUp which is commonly used by architects.  Being in this work environment helped me experience and get a feel for what its like to work as an architect.

LINK Reflection

Coming into link my skill range was pretty limited compared to the people I was working with however my interest in design led me to gaining new skills. I could offer my drawing skills which were very helpful in drafting and overall my artistic motivation to create and design. Throughout my internship I developed new skills that I will be able to use in my future and career. For example I learned how to use Google SketchUp a 3D modeling program which my mentors often use to create models of buildings. I also learned how to be precise and think ahead through drafting. My project was to design a house with the final product being sketched out floor plans and a 3D model of the house. The floor plans were done by hand in pen and once I got to the final draft it took me about 10 tries before I got it right. Every line I made had to be precise and exact and if I made one little mistake I had to redo the whole thing no matter how far along I was. This process was irritating and tedious and took the span of few days to complete but it shed some light onto what designing a house is really and how important attention to detail and focus are.

Some of the challenges I faced were during my first weeks, both my mentors were very busy trying to finish the plans for a house so it could go into permitting by the end of the week. This left me alone for most of the time even though I had my project laid out and tasks I could do it was difficult to concentrate and be sure what I was doing was right. I didn’t want to ask too many question or take up to much of my mentors time because I knew they were busy. Even though I completed most of my tasks quickly I learned to think ahead about what else I could do to plan for my project, such as looking up tutorials and learning  how to use SketchUp. I made all the questions I asked meaningful and tried to get as much information as I possibly could out of each one, I tried to make the time I had with my mentors worthwhile.

I believe my mentors would be open to hosting other high school interns because they were able to share their knowledge about architecture with me and I was able to get something valuable out of it. I think I made a good impression on this company and set a good example for future interns because I was interested and engaged in the work they were doing at the firm. My mentors were very supportive and set me up for success they inspired and immersed me in their work encouraging me to add a creative mindset and perspective to their workplace.

This internship has helped me prepare for college and a career because now I know that architecture and design are things I am very interested in pursuing in college and as a career.

Going into this internship I thought that architecture was more about the overall broad planning and designing of a building, now I understand the amount of responsibility architects have and how important details are. I realized that it's not always fun and exciting working in architecture for all of the fun parts there are tedious plans and details to be deeply thought out. Overall this experience was a very helpful way for me to experience what it is like to work as architect and how they follow their passions and find meaning in their work.

Illumination, Fluidity, and Confluence are three design aspects that I tried to use throughout my design these adjectives are based off of themes I found through the interviewing process of my client.

Precedents:

These images are inspiration from the beginning of my designing process which I believe embody the themes above. I chose these images based off of the overall use of space and even small details.
